Aside from all of the new announcements at BlizzCon 2017, the development team gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at Overwatch. Some Overwatch concepts like Jetpack Cat, Mama Hong, and a few others never made it into the game.
Different Overwatch concepts for heroes
Overwatch is filled with different types of creative characters that each have their own background. The game boasts diversity and it doesn’t fall short of it. However, there was a time when the game branches out to different directions, evident by its concept art.
According to PC Gamer, game director Jeff Kaplan and art director Arnold Tsang took the time to share some of these art pieces during the Overwatch Archive panel. They made these concepts way back in 2013 before the game was officially announced.
The developers finally release the highly-requested Jetpack Cat concept art, alongside plenty of others. One concept named Mama Hong is an Asian woman with curlers in her hair. One interesting bit about her kit is that she has an ability called “manslaughter.” However, some of the art also featured some familiar faces, like Recluse and Helio.

The developers showed off more than art as they even showcased an early build of the game. Needless to say, everything looks extremely rough as they haven’t fleshed it out yet. You can still see how they formed the game despite the textures and blocky map. Some of the founding characters were Hanzo, Mercy, Reinhardt, Reaper, Tracer, Pharah, Winston, Torbjorn, and Widowmaker.
Overall, it’s great to see how the game turned out. While there are many elements the developers didn’t put in, we still have a solid game that has over 35 million players to date. Hopefully, the development team can use these Overwatch concepts as an inspiration for other heroes in the future. You can play Blizzard’s first-person shooter on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
